Saving The Lemur

It is interesting how on occasions when you set about to do something for all the right reasons it can backfire on you.

For many years I´ve been involved in organisations to try to save our planets most precious species. A year ago I had Rob Stewart, a Director of WildAid, to Necker. WildAid does wonderful work trying to save the few remaining tigers, the sharks, the gorillas and the lemurs and other threatened species. Incidentally, Rob also directed the wonderful film `Sharkwater´ about the plight of the shark due to shark finning for soup. Rob urged me to turn our Foundation´s attention to helping save the lemur by giving them another island other than Madagascar to live and breed on. He told me that "lemurs are some of the most threatened primates on Earth and their future has never been more uncertain. Deforestation, bush meat, political instability and the withdrawal of foreign aid is pushing Madagascar and its wildlife to the brink. Mankind is causing a major extinction, the largest in 65million years, and it´s going to take bold steps like this to protect what´s left. Since most lemurs are vegetarian they shouldn´t pose a significant threat to the local wildlife on Mosquito".

I commissioned an in depth study of Mosquito on its fauna and wildlife. The wildlife had been decimated by rats and there was little left of it except geckos that had survived their onslaught. We set about introducing a program to rid the island of the rats.

Since most lemurs that we were planning to bring to the island are exclusively vegetarian, the sifaka lemur, the black lemur and the red ruffed lemur, our experts were not concerned about the geckos. The ringtailed lemur eats mainly fruit and leaves and might eat the occasional gecko, but I was advised that since geckos are nocturnal and ringtailed lemurs diurnal even with the ringtails it would be unlikely that they would eat any geckos at all. And since they will be fed plenty of food, under the care of a full time professionally trained person, they wouldn´t have the need to forage.

We then brought in lemur experts from Africa to see if Mosquito was a suitable habitat for lemurs. Their conclusions were that the dense and tropical thatch palm canopy on Mosquito was perfect, and that they´d thrive on Mosquito. And since they dislike swimming, there was no danger of them leaving the island for Virgin Gorda.

So armed with this research, we spoke to a number of zoos who breed lemurs and they said they loved the idea and would be happy to supply us (obviously none of the lemurs would come from Madagascar as has been claimed by one enthusiastic aspiring politician. We were about to give the lemur a second island in the world to survive and hopefully thrive, and the children of the British Virgin Islands a special treat.

Then I woke one morning to a press onslaught from a gecko specialist in the Caribbean. "Lemurs are aggressive, omnivorous animals that eat absolutely everything. Introducing them would be an appalling idea. They would probably wipe out the gecko". There would be "grave environmental problems". This expert was certainly a gecko specialist but a lemur specialist he certainly was not. But the damage had been done and further inaccurate stories of disease and destruction became concerning issues for the people of the British Virgin Islands. The only positive that came out of the global press hoorah to follow was that Russell Mittermeier, the world-renowned lemur expert told me that in one week we´d done more to bring attention to the plight of the lemur than he´d been able to do in a lifetime! Maybe a little controversy was worth it.

Anyway since our original purpose is to save endangered species I would hate to be responsible for potentially damaging another species. So in the spirit of compromise and goodwill I will keep the lemurs enclosed whilst we get experts to conduct further surveys on geckos and particularly the tiny dwarf geckos that are found on Virgin Gorda and Mosquito Island. If these studies indicate any real risk to these geckos, we will keep the lemurs enclosed.

We have thoroughly enjoyed giving the children of BVI schools regular tours of Necker Island, and particularly for them to see the 250 strong flock of breeding flamingos, the giant tortoises, the rock iguanas and the other wildlife species that live on Necker. Once our work on Mosquito Island is finished we very much look forward to doing the same there.

Another Man Shot in Legs
BVI Platinum News
Published: April 29, 2011 1:11 pm AST
For the second time in less than three days, another man has been hospitalized with gunshot wounds to his legs. The most recent incident occurred shortly after midnight on Friday, April 29.

Information is that a young man who turned up to the Peebles Hospital with injuries, reportedly told Police that he was in the vicinity of the basketball court in Long Bush with other men, when a loud explosion was heard.

He also reportedly told Police that everyone ran for cover, but moments later he felt a burning sensation to his leg and quickly noticed blood pouring.

It is believed that he was shot in one leg, but the bullet exited and entered the other.

Investigations are continuing.

On Thursday, Police reported that a man stated that he was in the vicinity of Mickey's Bar in Scatliffe Alley around 11:00 pm on Wednesday when he was approached by an unidentified jeep. A man with a shirt tied around his face exited the passenger door, demanded money and then discharged several rounds of ammunition hitting the victim twice in both legs. The victim was then robbed of money, jewelry and a cellular phone.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force is again encouraging members of the public who know of individuals in possession of guns to report this information confidentially to the Intelligence Unit at 468-9339. Persons who provide this information will greatly assist the officers now dedicated to the task of removing these weapons from the Territory.

Likewise, Police are encouraging persons who may have heard or seen anything suspicious in the area of Scatliffe Alley after 11:00 pm on Wednesday night to contact the Criminal Investigation Unit at 494-3822.

Persons can also give information anonymously by calling the anonymous Crimestoppers hotline number 800-TIPS (8477) or give information via the police website at www.rvipolice.com under the heading "Help Us Solve a Crime".

Cuba denounces acquittal of former CIA agent Luis Posada as a farce

US accused of protecting a known terrorist after jury clears anti-communist agent of all 11 charges against him

Cuba has denounced as a "farce" the acquittal in the United States of Luis Posada Carriles, a former CIA agent who is accused of terrorist attacks against the island.

The foreign ministry said Friday's verdict, which found the 83-year-old not guilty on all 11 counts of perjury, obstruction of justice and immigration fraud, showed the US continued to protect a known terrorist.

"This is an additional demonstration of the support and shelter the American authorities have historically given him," it said in a statement over the weekend.

A jury in El Paso, Texas cleared Posada Carriles after deliberating for just three hours, an unexpectedly swift climax to a closely watched 13-week trial which cast fresh light on the octogenarian's lengthy career as an anti-communist agent. The defendant, a hero to militant anti-Castro exiles, hugged his lawyers and told reporters he was grateful to the US, the court and the jury for what he said was a fair trial.

"What happened here should serve as an example for justice in my country, Cuba, which is unfortunately in the hands of a dictator."

Posada Carriles, who as a student came into contact with a young Fidel Castro, opposed the revolutionary government which seized power in 1959 and three years later joined a CIA-backed invasion by Cuban exiles.

The attack flopped but he escaped, was trained in sabotage by US handlers and spent the next decades plotting to kill Castro and other leftwing targets in the region.

He moved to Venezuela where he was accused of masterminding the 1976 suitcase bombing of a Cubana Airlines jet that killed 73 people, including the national fencing team. Months earlier his links with the CIA were severed, according to declassified US documents.

Posada Carriles escaped from a Venezuelan jail in 1985, where he spent eight years awaiting trial for the atrocity, which he denied, and resumed plotting against Castro. In an interview with the New York Times he took responsibility for 1997 bomb attacks against Cuba's tourist industry, which killed an Italian tourist in a Havana hotel, but later recanted the confession.

He was arrested in possession of explosives in Panama in 2000 and charged with plotting to assassinate Castro at a regional summit. He served four years in jail before being pardoned by Panama's outgoing president, Mireya Moscoso, prompting accusations of political cronyism between Panama, Cuban exiles in Miami and the Bush administration.

In 2005 Posada Carriles surfaced in Miami. The US refused Cuban and Venezuelan extradition requests, claiming he would not receive a fair trial in either country. Caracas and Havana accused the US of hypocrisy in allowing the region's most notorious terrorist to live freely and openly while amid the post 9/11 "war on terror".

Soon afterwards US authorities charged Posada Carriles with the relatively minor offences of lying to immigration officials about how he entered the US and his role in the Havana bombings. More than 20 prosecution witnesses testified in the court.

Jurors heard him speaking English in recordings by Ann Bardach, the New York Times journalist to whom he spoke about the bombings, despite later claiming he did not speak the language.

Observers expected convictions on at least some of the charges but the jury stunned prosecutors with a swift, unanimous and complete acquittal.

"We're obviously disappointed by the decision," said a justice department spokesman, Dean Boyd.

The head of Cuba's parliament, Ricardo Alarcon, accused the judge, Kathleen Cardone, of not allowing jurors to see crucial evidence.

"The stupid and shameful farce is over," he told AP. "There were things the jury did not know."

Venezuela's government denounced the trial and verdict as "theatre" and said Washington continued to shelter a mass murderer.

"The US government's protection of Posada Carriles has become an emblematic case of the US double standard in the international fight against terrorism," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Posada Carriles's lawyer said he planned to return to his home and family in Miami. Leaders of Miami's Cuban exile community said he should be left to live in peace and that it was time to look ahead, not backwards.

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Keri Harrigan lost his life because Rodney Simmonds Jnr.,22, the alleged mastermind behind the Moneygram robbery, thought he was in possession of the $193,000 stolen in the heist.

Mr. Harrigan, 26, was killed on the evening of March 16, 2011 while he was hanging out with friends at the Sticket, Long Look.

Mr. Simmonds, Yan Edwards and Allen Baptiste, 32, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court this afternoon to answer murder charges. The men were not required to plea.

The trio was charged with murder and the conspiracy to murder Mr. Harrigan, while Mr. Edwards and Mr. Simmonds were also charged with conspiracy to murder Melbourne Francis.

Acting Principal Counsel Tiffany Scatliffe told the court the trail of violence began on the day of the Moneygram robbery – January 21, 2011.

She disclosed that the Moneygram robbers left the cash in the vicinity of the ‘ghetto’ in Road Town where it was found and taken by persons unknown.

The Senior Crown Counsel said that Mr. Simmonds , the alleged mastermind of the robbery, believed that Mr. Harrigan and Mr. Francis along with other persons were in possession of the cash.

In light of this, Mr. Simmonds contacted Mr. Edwards and conspired with him to kill the two men.

Allen Baptiste allegedly shot Harrigan thrice. Photo: VINO

The court heard that Mr. Simmonds and Mr. Edwards, along with other persons, set out to kill Mr. Francis on March 13, 2011. It is alleged that Mr. Edwards, a fire officer, shot at the vehicle Mr. Francis was driving in Nottingham Estate. He survived the attempt on his life.

The following day, March 14, 2011, Mr. Edwards along with Mr. Baptiste and Mr. Simmonds made arrangements to kill Mr. Harrigan, Ms. Scatliffe informed the court.

And it was on March 16, 2011 around 7:15 pm, Mr. Edwards and Mr. Baptiste went looking for Mr. Harrigan and according to the Senior Crown Counsel Scatliffe, Mr. Baptiste, 32, in disguise shot Mr. Harrigan three times in the head.

The court also heard that the Moneygram robbery, the attempted murder of Mr. Francis and Mr. Harrigan’s killing will all be conducted in one preliminary inquiry (PI), as they are all intertwined. Ms. Scatliffe notified Senior Magistrate Valerie Stephens that detectives are still in the process of getting witnesses’ statements, therefore the file will be ready in two to three weeks. The matter is up for report on April 20.

    The trio is on remand.

Stephen Daniels is representing Mr. Edwards, while Duane Jean Baptiste was hired by Mr. Simonds and Mr. Baptiste.

The Crown’s team comprises Ms. Scatliffe, Crown Counsels Valston Graham and Lelise Ann Faulkner.

Meanwhile, Senior Investigating Officer at the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, Detective Inspector Nigel Niven, in a press release, expressed gratitude for the public’s input in helping to combat crime and appealed for continued assistance.

“Our investigation into these grave and serious crimes will continue. We have had a good response from the public and this has helped us tremendously.  However, I know that there are other people out there who have information that will also be important to us. I appeal for these people to make contact,” Mr. Niven said.

Members of the public who have any information in relation to these matters are asked to call the Special Investigation Unit directly on 468 2718.  All information received will be treated in the strictest confidence.  Alternatively contact can be made and information passed through the confidential and anonymous hotline – CrimeStoppers on 0800 8477.

my dear the question is in 5-10-20-40 years who will be there to pick up the inheritances, at the current pace it will be foreigners. Why cant the churches and parents pray for the bvi without prejudice and without ceasing? it is obvious that there is a plot to disenfranchise local young men and to distroy the character of older ones by the hook-death or by the crook-attraction and involvement in crime

Where are the parents, churches, mentors, youth groups, Department of Youth, after school programmes?? Where? Everybody is just playing politicks and not really helping these children

Oh, shut the heck up! Three grown men doing dirt of their own free will and it’s the fault of the churches and the government and lack of after school programs?

Y’all keep letting your children roam the streets at all kinds of ungodly hours and then expect churches and schools and elected officials to work magic? What you put in is what you get out. If you neglect your parental responsibilities, then they will become the responsibility of the state. It is as simple as that!
